Homeschool Portfolio Review: What to Expect

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

If this is your first time having a homeschool portfolio review done you may wonder what will happen during your time with the licensed teacher. Although each teacher may conduct their review slightly different, here is a basic overview of what to expect the day of your review.

You will meet with a state licensed teacher either in person or virtually via an online platform. The review typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour depending on the nature of the review (for older students with more difficult coursework it may take a bit longer).

The teacher will review your student's portfolio of work, along with the list of curriculum, books read, and activities and field trips.

Often times, the teacher will have a brief interview with the student about their school year and how they feel about it. This is not to "test" the student or see what they have learned, it is simply to ensure the student is engaged with the work and hear from the student.

At the end of the review, if the portfolio is complete and satisfactory, the teacher will complete the review form for you to take to your county homeschool office. This is also a good time to ask any questions you may have about your child's school work or advice if you are thinking about a curriculum change or the like. It's your chance to pick a teacher's brain so don't be shy.

That's all there is to it! You've completed another a successful year of homeschooling - it's time to celebrate!
