Reading Comprehension Workshops
Now offering group classes to focus on reading comprehension, including text structures, vocabulary, synthesizing and summarizing information across genres. Students are grouped by age/grade and will read a novel or selection together over 4 weeks while completing activities and writing assignments to dig into the topic and structure of the text in a deeper way. These are hybrid classes, meeting twice a month and then have an optional online class component where students can discuss and respond to their reading between meetings.

These sessions meet in person in Bluewater Bay 2 times per month.
Student Supplies needed:

copy of the current novel
​
pencil pouch/case with the following:
Pencils/pens
highlighter
colored pencils
scissors
glue stick
All other supplies will be provided.

Reading Comprehension Workshop 1
For 5th and 6th Graders ages 10 - 12.
Meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11am

During the first semester this class will read:
1) Holes by Louis Sachar and
2) From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg
We will use these novels to study setting and character along with different text structures and relating the text to our current world along with our own background experience. We will study vocabulary specific to the novels and participate in various hands-on activities to deepen our understanding of the text and related topics.

Reading Comprehension Workshop 2
For 7th and 8th Graders ages 12 - 14
Meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30 - 11am

During the first semester this class will read:
1) A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
2) The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer (the Young Readers Edition)
We will use these reading selections to discuss text structure, reading tools to tackle different genres, vocabulary and digging deeper into the subjects (Like what is a tesseract?) through hands on activities. We will also respond to the text through discussions and writing, including an optional online classroom option for discussion questions between meetings.
